Does Online Therapy Actually Work?

When you think of therapy, what do you picture? Perhaps a sterile room with a couple of armchairs? A few houseplants in front of some vertical blinds? A stock image with a motivational quote on the wall? For a long time, that was the only way to get help. But as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, the question I get asked most often lately is: “Is it really the same over a screen?”

You might worry that the "human connection" gets lost across the Wi-Fi. But the reality is remote CBT doesn’t have to be a "backup" option—it can be a power move for your mental health.

The Proof: It’s Not Just "Talk," It’s Science

I’m a big believer in evidence. I wouldn't offer a service if the data didn't back it up. Clinical research has shown that for things like anxiety, stress, and depression, online CBT is just as effective as sitting in the same room.

In fact, a landmark study by the University of Zurich compared patients receiving CBT for depression in-person versus those receiving it online. Not only did both groups improve at the same rate, but three months after treatment, the online group actually showed fewer symptoms than the office-based group.

The Takeaway: Remote therapy works because you are learning to use your CBT tools in the exact environment where you actually live your life. You aren't just "doing therapy" in a clinic; you're building resilience in your own home.
